Hungarian telecoms company UPC switch from closed to open source LMS

UPC, Hungary’s leading digital cable TV, voice, broadband and data provider with around 3,000 employees, needed a reliable learning management system after several previous solutions fell short. In 2014 the company sought an LMS to support staff and sub‑contractor training, create role- and department-based learning plans, integrate with performance management and other internal systems, manage face‑to‑face training, migrate existing courses, provide automated notifications, and meet strict security standards.

UPC selected Totara Learn for its breadth of corporate functionality and cost-effectiveness, requiring only minimal customization. The team migrated content from their prior Oracle system, rolled out almost 200 courses in the first year, and trained over 3,000 users with positive feedback; they also reduced travel costs, improved management of classroom training, enabled both custom and off‑the‑shelf content, delivered automated notifications and visible learning plans, and achieved successful system integrations and security testing.
