How AssessTech leveraged Totara and BuildEmpire to increase efficiency in rail training

AssessTech, a rail training provider, was spending too much time on marking long-form quiz and assignment submissions in its AssessBook system, with around 30,000 quiz questions needing review each year. The workload made grading arduous and required bespoke reporting, limiting the Training Team’s time for course delivery and content creation.

Totara facilitated the project by connecting AssessTech with partner BuildEmpire, who developed four bespoke plugins for AssessBook, including an unmarked work dashboard and workflows for assignment and quiz history, plus a quiz helper to reduce repeat marking. With Totara’s support, AssessTech cut marking time by 50%, made grading faster and less stressful, improved trainer satisfaction, and reinvested time into delivery and creation, which also helped boost pass rates.
