Bridging the gap between training and ongoing competence and compliance

Great Western Railway (GWR), one of the UK’s largest train operating companies, needed a better way to manage training, compliance, and ongoing competence for more than 1,000 geographically dispersed drivers. Working with Totara partner AssessTech, GWR wanted to move beyond traditional top-down training and help staff take greater ownership of their competence in a safety-critical environment.

To address this, GWR implemented AssessTech’s ACMS and AssessBook, underpinned by Totara’s LXP, to give assessors, managers, and candidates a shared view of training and assessment history. The integrated approach improved daily competence management, focused managers on development areas, supported coaching, and generated evidence of proficiency and expertise across the organization.
