A Totara Case Study
Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHR), one of the UK’s largest trusts with 6,500 staff serving 750,000 people, faced CQC scrutiny after fragmented training systems left mandatory learning unclear and hard to manage. Multiple LMSs, no consistent management hierarchy, high admin burden and rising training costs led to low visibility of compliance, poor manager accountability and operational inefficiencies that risked patient care standards.
BHR partnered with Think Associates to implement Totara Learn, creating a single portal called BEST with a bulk-uploaded organisational hierarchy, single sign-on, study-leave booking and integrated e‑learning. Within eight weeks 4,600 staff had accessed the system; mandatory compliance rose from 84% to 92%, reporting and manager oversight improved, and the trust realised significant time and cost savings—strengthening staff training, revalidation and overall patient care.
