Wegmans eliminates 216,700 foam coolers with Tosca RPCs

Wegmans, a major northeast grocery retailer, sought to eliminate unsustainable EPS styrofoam coolers from its seafood supply chain. The company partnered with vendor Tosca to pioneer the use of Reusable Plastic Containers (RPCs) as a more sustainable packaging alternative.

Tosca developed and provided RPCs that effectively kept seafood cold during transport. After a successful pilot, Tosca designed a new, smaller tote to meet all of Wegmans' needs. This solution implemented by Tosca led to a significant reduction in waste, eliminating the use of over 216,700 foam coolers by the end of 2020. The program is on track to remove more than 1 million pounds of styrofoam from the supply chain.
