Youngstown Tool & Die, an Ohio-based extrusion die maker, was looking for a new 3D CAD/CAM solution in the late nineties to replace its 2D system. After evaluating 18 different software packages, the company faced the challenge of finding one that could handle its specific needs, including managing tapered cutters and 5-axis machining for manufacturing aluminum extrusion dies.

The vendor, TopSolid, provided its TopSolid'Design and TopSolid'Cam software, which was the only solution capable of meeting their technical requirements. The results were significant, with the company reducing the time to manufacture parts from 8 hours for 1-2 parts to 8 hours for 4-5 parts, a major increase in productivity. The integration between design and manufacturing modules streamlined their process, and after the implementation, Youngstown Tool & Die planned to expand its number of TopSolid stations.
