Batesville Casket Company, a subsidiary of Hillenbrand and a leader in death care products, needed to improve hiring quality after a corporate split caused its Topgrading process to slip and hiring effectiveness to decline. With a lean manufacturing operation and limited bandwidth for turnover, the company needed a more consistent way to identify and hire strong talent.
Topgrading helped Batesville revive its hiring discipline through workshops, competency-based Job Scorecards, and better intern selection and onboarding practices. As a result, hiring effectiveness improved from 60% to 80%, and the company was on track to reach 90% A Players, with reported hiring of A talent rising into the low 80s after one year in role.
