University of Washington boosts engagement and enrollment with Top Hat for 1,200 students each quarter

The University of Washington faced the challenge of maintaining student engagement and connection in large online classes after the campus closure during the COVID-19 pandemic. Professor Nicole McNichols, who taught the university's most popular course, was concerned students would disengage without the ability to interact with professors and peers.

Using Top Hat's interactive digital textbook and suite of classroom tools, the professor implemented a flipped classroom model. This solution included in-line comprehension questions, interactive polling, quizzes, and anonymous discussions. Top Hat helped the university achieve improved student engagement, higher test scores, and increased enrollment, with the course maintaining a 5/5 quality of education score from student evaluations.
