Top Hat Was Essential to Student Success in This Massive Class

Georgia State University, a large public research university, needed a better way to keep students engaged in Professor Ricardo Nogueira’s massive Introduction to Weather and Climate classes of more than 500 students. After trying iClicker and running into issues with distractions, forgotten devices, and cheating, he turned to Top Hat to create a more interactive learning environment and help students stay focused.

Using Top Hat, Nogueira added frequent in-class learning checks, attendance, tournaments, secure quizzes and tests, and an interactive textbook tailored to his course. The results included a more improved grade distribution, a more than 3% drop in DFW rates, and $140 in textbook savings for students. Top Hat also helped streamline assessment and data tracking, contributing to Nogueira winning an instructional innovation award at Georgia State University.
