Indiana University boosts Top Hat adoption 690% with school-wide access

Indiana University sought to overcome barriers to adopting active learning tools. Their previous clicker system was costly and limited, and faculty were hesitant to invest time in technologies without institutional backing. They needed a vetted, affordable, and accessible solution to give instructors the right tools for active learning, which is a cornerstone of their teaching development program.

By implementing a school-wide licensing agreement with Top Hat, the university removed the cost barrier for students and provided universal access to the platform. This solution led to a dramatic increase in adoption, with a 690% increase in student usage and a 157% increase in faculty usage. Top Hat enabled greater student engagement and improved learning outcomes; one instructor reported that participating students achieved an average exam score of 79.4% compared to 46.7% for non-participants.
