How Top Hat Saved Ohio State University Students $1.8 Million

The Ohio State University, one of the nation’s top public universities, was looking for a way to standardize classroom response technology and reduce costs for students and faculty. As interest grew in bring-your-own-device tools, OSU needed a more scalable alternative to hardware clickers and other classroom engagement systems. Top Hat’s Classroom product was used to help students participate in class through their personal devices.

To address this, The Ohio State University adopted a site-wide license for Top Hat and rolled out training and support for hundreds of faculty members. With Top Hat, the university transitioned more than 10,000 students from clickers to a cloud-based platform, and usage grew to 43,000 students by Fall 2017. The program saved students an estimated $1.8 million, while educator adoption increased 48% over two years, from 334 to 701 instructors.
