How Top Hat Encouraged Students to Engage with Sensitive Subject Matter

Dalhousie University, a large Canadian university, faced a participation challenge in Matt Numer’s 450-student human sexuality class, where the sensitive subject matter made students hesitant to speak up and made it difficult to gauge understanding. To help address this, the university turned to Top Hat Classroom.

Top Hat introduced anonymous in-class questions and forum discussions so students could engage from their own devices without speaking in front of peers. The results were strong: students rated Top Hat 9.2/10 for helping them engage in class and 8.4/10 for improving critical thinking, while the platform also made students more comfortable discussing sensitive topics and increased overall participation.
