CUNY Hunter College boosts chemistry test scores 4% with Top Hat

The City University of New York's Hunter College faced a challenge with a large cohort of non-science majors who were focused on grades rather than learning chemistry course material. Professor Kirsten Grant found that students were accessing the institution's clunky LMS infrequently and waiting until just before exams to review content. She needed a solution from vendor Top Hat to motivate her 650 students per semester to engage with the material.

Hunter College implemented Top Hat's end-to-end course solution, using it for presentations, assignments, and a dynamic textbook. This allowed for integrated in-class questions and out-of-class pre- and post-class assignments. Using Top Hat resulted in a 4% average increase in student test scores. An overwhelming 95% of students approved of the platform, agreeing that the pre-class assignments and post-class homework were effective for their learning.
