Arizona State University cuts DFW rates by 16% with Top Hat

Arizona State University (ASU) faced a challenge in its large-scale, asynchronous online Introductory Chemistry course, where engaging over 750 students with varying levels of motivation was difficult. The course relied on a costly, unwieldy printed textbook that was not customizable, did not align with lectures, and offered no way to assess student comprehension or track engagement, leaving many students at risk of falling behind.

The solution was implemented using a Top Hat textbook. Professor Jennifer Donovan authored a custom digital text for the course, which incorporated real-world examples, inclusive representation of scientists, and embedded knowledge checks. This Top Hat solution led to a measurable 16% decrease in DFW (D/F/Withdrawal) rates and a 22.7% increase in 'A' and 'B' grades, while also driving a 16.9% increase in positive student course evaluations.
