Smiths Medical, a global medical-device provider, faced complex inventory-management challenges across diverse product lines (hardware, disposables, kits, OEMs) where stocking needs depended on demand volatility, shelf life and lead times. To tackle this, Smiths Medical engaged ToolsGroup and deployed ToolsGroup’s SO99+ advanced supply chain planning software to improve forecasting, safety-stock setting and overall inventory decisions.

ToolsGroup implemented a two-track SO99+ project—one track reset safety-stock levels for 1,100 items in Oracle while the other modeled inventory redeployment to support volatile SKUs—and delivered measurable results: product-line out-of-stocks fell 26%, service levels rose by 2 percentage points, back orders dropped 52%, inventory decreased 8% and safety stock was reduced by 11%; the SO99+ model also showed a route to 95%+ service levels while improving finished-goods turns.
