Reduces inventory and increases service with centralized, automated planning

Kronans Apotek, the third-largest pharmacy chain in Sweden with over 300 pharmacies and roughly 27,000 SKUs (about 4 million location/SKU combinations), struggled with decentralized inventory management, high stock levels, seasonal fluctuations, frequent product replacements and new store launches. Aiming to cut inventory by 15% and raise service levels, Kronans Apotek selected ToolsGroup’s SO99+ (Service Optimizer 99+)—implemented with Optilon consultants—and Tableau to centralize and automate demand planning and inventory optimization.

Using ToolsGroup’s SO99+ the retailer automated daily forecasting and replenishment across ~320 locations, moving from store-level manual parameter setting to a centralized process run by four people (saving the equivalent of 24 full-time roles). The implementation delivered roughly a 15% reduction in inventory for prescription items, a 1% improvement in service levels, better forecast accuracy, and a shift to truly demand-driven, campaign- and season-aware planning.
