Mastering the eCommerce long tail

Ratioform, Germany’s market leader in packaging, faced a classic eCommerce long-tail problem: 90% of SKUs were slow movers with lumpy, seasonal demand and its legacy system only supported aggregated moving averages. That led to excess inventory, heavy manual planning and difficulty meeting service-level goals. To address this, Ratioform selected ToolsGroup’s SO99+ supply chain planning software for its demand sensing and inventory optimization capabilities and for integration with MS Dynamics AX.

ToolsGroup implemented SO99+ (including planner training and a seamless MS Dynamics AX interface), enabling SKU-level demand analysis, automated order grouping and new algorithms to balance bulk discounts against inventory costs. The result: forecast quality and insights improved, product availability rose 3–4 points to a 97% service level, safety stocks and order cycles fell, planners were freed for higher‑value work, and Ratioform saved a six‑figure euro amount in inventory — recouping the investment within a year.
