A ToolHound Case Study
Dow Chemical Company faced major tool-control challenges at its Fort Saskatchewan plant in Alberta, where more than 15,000 pieces of equipment were spread across eight tool cribs using inconsistent, largely manual tracking methods. With little visibility between cribs, the company often bought or rented items unnecessarily, and management wanted tighter accountability and better control over tools. Dow turned to ToolHound Desktop to solve the problem.
ToolHound implemented a bar code–driven tool tracking system that scanned employee IDs and tool IDs in real time, giving Dow instant reporting on inventory value, locations, usage, overdue items, and certification status. The result was a single consistent tracking process across all eight cribs, reduced unnecessary purchasing, improved tool returns, and an accurate inventory that revealed enough surplus to stock 60% of a ninth crib. ToolHound also helped Dow expand tracking to other assets, including company trucks.
