Valeo and TomTom Reaching the next level of automated driving

The automotive supplier Valeo faced a challenge in advancing automated driving systems. Their existing mono-sensor localization approach was vulnerable; if a single sensor failed or map data was invalid, it could dramatically impact a vehicle's ability to operate safely. To reach higher levels of automation, they collaborated with vendor TomTom to create a more robust solution.

TomTom's solution integrated its HD Map and RoadDNA localization suite with Valeo's LiDAR and software. This multi-sensor approach harnessed multiple data layers, allowing a vehicle to accurately determine its location even if one sensor failed or visibility was poor. Successful driving tests in three major cities proved the concept, marking a significant milestone. This redundancy, delivered by TomTom, significantly improves system robustness and safety, moving the industry closer to making highly automated vehicles the norm.
