A Toloka Case Study
AliExpress Russia, facing widespread inaccurate product translations after its 2019 launch, turned to Toloka for a crowdsourcing-based localization solution to fix catalog translation errors and improve shopper experience. Traditional multi-stage automated pipelines were too slow and inefficient, so AliExpress engaged Toloka’s crowd-powered translation workflow to tackle the problem.
Toloka replaced the validate-after-translate pipeline with an iterative multiple-choice approach: generate up to four translation variants (from different methods), let Tolokers select the best option or submit a new version, and repeat until consensus. The Toloka method improved translation accuracy, reduced automation-related mistranslations, simplified project setup, concentrated metrics and budget into one task-per-project, and required more careful Toloker selection. Measurable impacts included faster starts and lower costs — moving from two projects at $0.01 + 50% commission to one project at $0.02 + 25% commission — while delivering higher-quality localized content.
