A Toll Group Case Study
The Royal Australian Navy worked with Toll Group on the Air Warfare Destroyer program, Australia’s largest Defence procurement project at the time. The challenge was to move 65 oversized hull modules, some as large as 20m x 18m x 10m and weighing up to 235 tonnes, from fabrication sites in Victoria and New South Wales to the ASC shipyard in Adelaide for assembly.
Toll Group solved the problem by designing and building the Toll Hobart, a specialised marine barge for shallow waters and ocean towage, and using SPMTs and tug transport to move the modules by sea instead of road. The hull blocks were successfully delivered from Newcastle and Williamstown to Adelaide, with the Newcastle shipment completing the journey in eight days and the Victorian shipment arriving in two days, supporting assembly of the new warships.
