A Toll Group Case Study
Northern Western Australia Transporting Company worked with Toll Group to improve the safety and efficiency of its dangerous goods transport operation in northern Western Australia. The company was hauling ammonium nitrate by BA triple combinations with end-tipper and belly-dumper trailers over a 2,500-kilometre round trip to remote Pilbara mine sites, but a fleet audit found multiple manual-handling risks during tyre changes, tarpaulin release, door opening, and product discharge.
Toll Group redesigned the belly dumpers in collaboration with engineers, manufacturers, and customers, adding a crane-based spare-tyre lift, electronic tarp control, an automated door safety system, a wider and steeper discharge chute, non-stick lining, and vibrating hammers to clear stuck product. Toll Group also fitted safety technologies including Driver State Sensor cameras, EBS/ABS disc brakes, GPS monitoring, and duress alarms. The result was reduced manual handling injuries, faster unload times, and improved productivity, helping Toll Group extend contracts with two key customers for bulk dangerous goods transport in Western Australia.
