Norske Skog - Customer Case Study

Norske Skog, working with Australian logistics contractor Smart Logistics, needed to reduce the cost of shipping newsprint from its Boyer, Tasmania paper mill. They were using Toll Group’s freight transport services to move reels in 20ft Unitised Paper Modules (UPMs) by rail to Sydney and Adelaide, but maintenance, shrink wrapping, load restraint, cargo damage, and the need to return nested UPMs were driving up costs.

Toll Group, in partnership with ANL, replaced the UPM model with 40ft one-way ISO shipping containers and brought Norske Skog’s domestic, coastal, and international movements under one central point. This reduced maintenance and shrink wrapping costs, lowered cargo damage by using fully enclosed containers, eliminated the cost of returning UPMs for reuse, and cut administration costs through centralised logistics management.
