Australia’s largest steelworks - Customer Case Study

Australia’s largest steelworks in Port Kembla, New South Wales, needed a 29-metre-long, 68-tonne coke making quenching stack delivered from a local fabricator to site. The oversized load created major transport challenges, including tight workshop access, overhead power lines, road closures, and a narrow window to move the structure with minimal disruption. Toll Group was brought in to manage the heavy haulage project.

Toll Group developed a detailed transport management plan over 12 months and used specialised heavy-haul equipment, including two Volvo FH16 700 prime movers in a push-pull configuration, low loaders, steerable jinkers, cranes, and pilot vehicles. Toll Group also arranged permits, temporary removal of power lines, road occupancy approvals, and overnight traffic control. The stack was successfully secured in six hours and moved the next day in seven hours, with minimal disruption to the local community and steelworks operations.
