One Stone Lab School empowers students with two-thirds board control using Toddle

One Stone Lab School, a tuition-free high school in Idaho, faced the challenge of institutionalizing authentic student leadership rather than just teaching it as a concept. To achieve this, they partnered with Toddle to implement a unique governance model embedded in their school design from the outset.

The solution implemented with Toddle was a student-majority board structure, where students hold a two-thirds supermajority and legally vote on executive hiring, compensation, budgets, and long-term strategy. This provided real-world, rigorous application of the competency-based learning framework Toddle supports. The results include students navigating complex decisions like implementing an income-based tuition model and alumni demonstrating exceptional confidence and agency in college and careers, with many maintaining GPAs above 3.5.
