Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa preserves Martu language with Today through a Martu-led Stories of Country app

Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa (KJ), a Martu-led organization, collaborated with Today to address the challenge of preserving Martu languages and cultural identity. The goal was to create a digital platform that would safeguard this cultural heritage using a process that was genuinely Martu-led, with storytelling as the central method for passing on knowledge.

The solution developed by Today was the Stories of Country app, a digital tool created through a collaborative process that involved seeking permission and continuous feedback from Martu Elders. Icons were designed from the Elders' own illustrations, and the concept was tested on Country. The result is an app owned by Martu that successfully brings technology to Country, with the future aim of expanding this Today solution to more First Nations communities to help preserve the world's oldest living cultures.
