Overcoming VDI Storage Performance Challenges in Higher Education

Washington State University, a large public research university, wanted to virtualize student desktops for the College of Engineering and Architecture but found its existing storage couldn’t deliver the performance VDI required. The university also faced management complexity from multiple datastores across different storage arrays and was burdened by costly feature-by-feature licensing.

Tintri implemented a Tintri VMstore T540 flash storage appliance to support hundreds of IO-intensive virtual desktops and infrastructure VMs on a single datastore. With Tintri, WSU deployed hundreds of virtual desktops quickly, eliminated performance bottlenecks, simplified administration with VM-level visibility, and avoided hidden licensing costs, helping reduce operational expenses and deliver faster-than-laptop performance for VMs.
