Maastricht University Switches to Tintri for Better VDI Performance

Maastricht University, a large and international university in the Netherlands, needed to replace aging direct-attached storage that was slowing its Citrix-based virtual desktop environment. As it planned a broader move to VMware Horizon View and VMware App Volumes, the university looked for a more economical storage platform with better VDI performance, higher IOPS, and simpler management, and chose Tintri.

Tintri implemented one VMstore T540 for testing and two T850 systems for production, and the deployment was completed in less than two hours with Tintri Professional Services. The new environment improved VDI performance, simplified storage administration by eliminating LUN and SAN management, and helped Maastricht University scale to 1,100 concurrent VDI sessions for students, with plans for about 400 more desktops for staff; the university estimated that 80% of the performance gains came from Tintri.
