A Timely Case Study
Salem Hair Co., founded by Laurie Carter in 2015 after she left a six‑year tenure at another salon, set out to solve a common industry problem: traditional salon business models that neglect staff wellbeing and create large amounts of waste. Working from a tiny 40 sqm space with just two chairs, Laurie wanted a people‑centred, long‑term approach that addressed ergonomic strain on stylists and the environmental impact of salon waste.
Laurie built a team‑run salon culture and introduced sustainable operational changes — ergonomic tools, staff self‑care practices, and a recycling program using Refoil recycled aluminium and the Refoil collection method — alongside small habits like asking clients before printing receipts. The business has grown into a larger location with senior stylists, an apprentice and a nail/spray‑tan technician, generates strong social‑media word‑of‑mouth, and now recycles about 13 kg of aluminium each month while maintaining high staff and client satisfaction.
