A Timely Case Study
Hair Aid is an Australian charity that sends volunteer hairdressers to train people living in critical poverty — including survivors of trafficking and families in slum communities — so they can earn a living. In Cambodia volunteers encountered extreme need: low incomes, widespread poverty and vulnerable children and women rescued from the sex trade, with limited opportunities to gain practical skills.
Hair Aid’s solution is a fast, hands-on four-day course teaching five basic haircuts and business skills so trainees can start micro‑businesses. In Cambodia students mastered the cuts, graduated, and began earning income (a community haircut is about US$0.75), with standout trainees showcased at Sydney Hair Expo; volunteers raised funds, expanded projects to new locations, and inspired local initiatives like Community Cuts, demonstrating measurable empowerment and sustainable livelihood outcomes.
