Estonian Courts cuts transcription time with Tilde’s Salme, delivering 8–15% WER

The Estonian Courts, through the Ministry of Justice's Centre of Registers and Information Systems (RIK), faced the challenge of labor-intensive and time-consuming manual transcription of court hearings. To modernize this process, they partnered with vendor Tilde to develop a custom automated speech recognition (ASR) solution named Salme.

Tilde developed the Salme ASR system, which provides real-time and offline transcription integrated with the Court Information System. The solution, trained on over 800 hours of audio, achieves a word error rate between 8-15% with high-quality audio equipment. This implementation has significantly improved efficiency, saving time by providing immediate transcripts that require only post-transcription checks, as reported by the customer.
