State Grid Corporation of China achieves a faster-than-real-time EMS in 1 second with TigerGraph

State Grid Corporation of China, the world's largest electric utility company, faced the challenge of creating a faster-than-real-time Energy Management System (EMS) to identify and rectify power grid imbalances within a critical 5-second window. To achieve this, they partnered with vendor TigerGraph and its graph analytics platform.

The solution implemented by TigerGraph replaced conventional relational databases with a massively-parallel graph-based model, which naturally represents power system connections and eliminates time-intensive data preparation. This approach reduced the total execution time for State Estimation, Power Flow, and Contingency Analysis to just over one second combined, successfully delivering the first commercially viable faster-than-real-time EMS.
