Metsä Group, a forerunner in sustainable bio-economy, faced a challenge as forest ownership in Finland was shifting to a younger, urban generation with less professional forest management skills. This demographic change threatened the economic value and environmental health of privately-owned forests. They partnered with Tietoevry to address this.

Tietoevry created the Virtual Forest, a data-driven simulation solution that visualizes real forests and enables the planning and simulation of management operations. This allowed forest owners to see the effects of different actions on scenery and income without needing to travel, supporting easier decision-making. The project, which was shortlisted for an international award, is designed to substantially increase income for forest owners and have a positive impact on the environment.
