Helsinki Region Transport (HSL), the public transit authority for Finland's capital region, faced the challenge of modernizing its aging ticket and information system. They needed a state-of-the-art, flexible solution to handle millions of daily trips, introduce new pricing models, and provide real-time data for both passengers and conductors. To achieve this, HSL partnered with vendor Tietoevry to develop a new IoT-based ticket and information network.

Tietoevry implemented a modular and expandable web-based system, which involved updating over 10,000 devices including card readers, ticket machines, and information screens. The solution enabled a completely successful overnight transition to a new zone-based pricing model in April 2019 with no malfunctions. This made HSL a pioneer as Europe's first integrated IoT ticket network, providing seamless real-time information and laying the groundwork for future services.
