City of Tampere and Tietoevry developed AI-IoT test solution for pedestrian traffic safety

The City of Tampere, the third-largest city in Finland, faced a challenge with increasing pedestrian traffic accidents at intersections due to urbanization. To improve safety, the city partnered with vendor Tietoevry to develop a pilot solution using AI, IoT, and V2X communications.

Tietoevry implemented a system that automatically detects when a pedestrian intends to cross the street and alerts approaching cars to help prevent accidents. The results were promising, with the system achieving 99% accuracy under ideal conditions and 75% accuracy at night. This solution also lays a foundation for serving future autonomous vehicles.
