University of Chicago Medicine Improves Patient Care with Data

University of Chicago Medicine, a leading academic medical center, faced a shift to value-based care while struggling with fragmented data across many disparate systems and organizational silos. Leaders worried that without better data sharing and correlation, care quality and patient safety could suffer.

UChicago implemented a centralized TIBCO platform—streaming analytics, integration, messaging, monitoring, and Spotfire analytics—built with clinicians and IT through rapid prototyping. The eCART predictive model and real-time alerts cut in-hospital cardiac arrests by an estimated 15–20%, OR turnover fell 15–20% (about 4 minutes/room) with ~$600K annual savings (plus a projected $500K in the next phase), and at-risk patients are identified sooner to reduce readmissions; the program earned a TIBCO Trailblazer award.
