TIBCO & The University of Houston Collaborate to Give Students a Competitive Advantage in the Energy Industry

The University of Houston, a large research university located in the energy capital of the U.S., faced the challenge of preparing students for data‑rich careers in oil and gas amid strong regional competition. Faculty found Excel insufficient for rigorous analysis or storytelling with data, so UH needed a focused analytics and visualization curriculum to give graduates the practical skills employers require.

UH partnered with TIBCO to adopt Spotfire and build a standalone visual analytics course and integrated curriculum, teaching data cleaning, descriptive/predictive analytics, visualization design, and real‑world energy projects. The program has delivered faster insights and stronger decision‑making skills, produced graduates already proficient with industry tools, boosted enrollment, and strengthened corporate partnerships—positioning students to be immediately productive in the workforce.
