Merck Deploys Web-Based Visualization and Data Analysis Solution Enchancing Drug Discovery Efforts

Merck Research Laboratories (MRL) needed to accelerate and scale data analysis as high-throughput screening (HTS) raised testing from hundreds to tens of thousands of samples per day. This explosion of data made it hard to monitor quality and reliably identify true drug candidates while avoiding false positives and false negatives, and Merck required a powerful, easy-to-use solution that could be deployed enterprise-wide across a geographically dispersed research community.

MRL deployed StatServer with S-PLUS to centralize analytics and deliver web-based statistical and visualization tools through a standard browser. Statisticians develop and update analysis code centrally, enabling scientists worldwide to run sensitive, reproducible HTS analyses, generate concise "short lists" of candidate compounds, and share results more effectively—improving productivity, reducing erroneous hits, and providing a scalable platform that extends to genomics and pharmacology.
