Melbourne Airport Launches Digital Transformation to Become a Smart City

Melbourne Airport, Australia’s second‑busiest airport handling 34.6 million passengers a year and projected to reach about 64 million by 2033, needed to evolve from a “mini city” into a smart city. The airport faced fragmented data and siloed systems, and needed to shift from reactive to proactive—and eventually predictive—operations by turning disparate sensor and operational data into contextual, reliable information while addressing people and process challenges.

Working with systems integrator Nukon, Melbourne Airport deployed a vendor‑agnostic real‑time platform built on TIBCO technologies to aggregate devices and applications and present unified, actionable information. Delivered in under 20 weeks, the solution improved situational awareness for the Enhanced Airport Coordination Center, supported the efficient opening of Terminal 4 without major staffing increases, enhanced the customer journey, and created a scalable foundation to expand into parking, ground transport, retail and personalized passenger services.
