The Genomics Institute, led by Todd Wood, uses genomic sequencing and mapping to study rice—a critical global food crop—and needed to mine and analyze very large datasets to identify important genomic patterns. Researchers required a statistics platform that could handle gigabytes of data on modest hardware while providing advanced analysis and clear visualizations.

They chose S-PLUS 5.1 for UNIX for its S-language foundation, superior memory management, block I/O, broad import/export support, and modern statistical methods. With S-PLUS they could preprocess and analyze large data sets, discover significant genomic patterns, and communicate findings using Trellis graphics; vendor support and documentation were also reported as excellent.
