Athenahealth Disrupts the Healthcare IT Status Quo with APIs

Athenahealth, a leading provider of software-powered services for healthcare providers, set out in 2012 to reduce the burden of legacy healthcare IT by opening its cloud infrastructure to outside developers via APIs. The company faced a major challenge: attracting innovators to a regulated, complex industry where cumbersome point-to-point systems and liability concerns discouraged developer engagement.

Athenahealth partnered with TIBCO Mashery to launch a developer-friendly Marketplace in April 2013, implementing authentication, documentation, onboarding, and analytics to accelerate partner integrations. The Marketplace now hosts 180+ partners and 200 API keys, grew API calls from 42M to 145M in 18 months (245% increase) with endpoints up 192%, and now handles over 500M calls per month—while reducing internal costs, retiring interfaces, improving security, and creating new revenue opportunities.
