Achaogen Selects TIBCO Spotfire Platform to Help Develop New Antibiotics

Achaogen is a clinical‑stage biopharmaceutical company focused on discovering antibiotics to treat serious infections from multi‑drug‑resistant Gram‑negative bacteria. The company faced a data‑analysis bottleneck: complex MIC and assay results were stored in Oracle tables but their cheminformatics tools and browser‑friendly table designs provided only limited pivoting and sorting, forcing scientists into time‑consuming Excel macros and programmer intervention to extract structure–activity relationships.

To solve this, informatics scientist Rosemarie O’Shea deployed TIBCO Spotfire (trial then licensed server) directly connected to Oracle and used Spotfire Lead Discovery and Web Player for interactive reports. The platform enabled fast filtering, drill‑down, multi‑variable visualizations and on‑the‑fly calculations without reloading data, uncovering patterns missed by prior tools, reducing manual work and cost, and supporting broader analyses including in vivo studies and global strain epidemiology.
