Case Study: UNFCU achieves faster, more affordable mobile money transfers with Thunes

UNFCU (United Nations Federal Credit Union) serves more than 180,000 members of the UN community worldwide, many of whom live outside the United States and regularly send money to family and friends abroad. To meet their needs, UNFCU needed a transfer solution that was secure, fast, convenient, and affordable—especially for members in remote locations or crisis situations. Thunes was selected to help address these cross-border payment challenges with mobile money transfers.

Thunes partnered with UNFCU to enable members to send money from their UNFCU accounts to secure electronic accounts linked to recipients’ mobile phone numbers in emerging markets. The solution launched in February 2020 and, by year-end 2021, had expanded to 17 countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. As a result, UNFCU’s mobile money transfer transaction volume grew by 104%, showing strong adoption and measurable impact from the Thunes partnership.
