Thunderstone Helps JMI Manage its Large Collection of Medical Documents

Jeghers Medical Index (JMI), a medical library at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, needed a flexible way to manage and search a massive collection of historical medical journal articles—about one million items spanning roughly five million pages. After evaluating several vendors, JMI chose Thunderstone and its TEXIS full-text search platform for its cost, relevance, user interface, methodology, customization options, and fit for the project.

Thunderstone implemented TEXIS to host and manage the digitized collection and to improve retrieval with custom OCR matching, PubMed XML citations, and a Jeghers-created anatomical terms table. Thunderstone also added three search modes—Boolean, proximity, and Jeghers indexing—plus faceted result filtering. The result was a compact, low-maintenance collection managed by one full-time librarian, with more than 2,000 searches recorded in a year and usage by researchers around the world.
