Time Out, the long‑standing city guide brand, faced a shift from print to mobile and a fragmented first‑generation set of city apps that no longer met user expectations or the company’s global ambitions. With younger audiences increasingly using phones and tablets, Time Out needed a scalable, modern mobile product that showcased its trusted editorial voice while unlocking new revenue opportunities.
Working with ThoughtWorks, Time Out built a single universal iPhone app and underlying Global Platform—backed by RESTful APIs, agile development and TestFlight beta testing—to surface curated lists, location‑aware search, bookmarking, booking and special offers. The result is one global app that replaces individual city guides, accelerates and lowers the cost of rolling out new cities, improves quality and consistency, enables instant iterative updates, and creates new advertising and commerce revenue streams.
