ThoughtWorks partnered with the GSMA Development Fund to build Mobile and Development Intelligence (MDI), a public online database and community that centralizes mobile industry and development data for the developing world—which accounts for over 70% of the 6.4 billion active SIM connections. The core challenge was turning vast, heterogeneous datasets into an accessible, actionable service for diverse users (entrepreneurs, investors, academics, operators) on a tight budget and timeline.
A distributed ThoughtWorks team used its Social Impact Program, Distributed Agile and a continuous design-and-delivery approach—frequent usability testing, rapid iterations and automated deployments—to deliver a Beta in six months and a public launch shortly after. The outcome was an industry‑acclaimed, high‑quality platform with hundreds of engaged beta users, rapid response to late requirements, low defect rates at launch, and a clear roadmap (including an upcoming Investor’s Hub) to grow the community and features.
