Atlassian completes Bitbucket cloud migration in 3 months with ThoughtWorks

Atlassian, a leading global tech company, faced the challenge of migrating its core product, Bitbucket, a Git-based source code hosting tool handling a billion daily transactions, from its own data center to a public cloud. The goal was to improve security, scale, and reliability for its customers with zero downtime and minimal disruption. Atlassian partnered with vendor Thoughtworks to achieve this.

Thoughtworks implemented the solution by adopting a thin slice approach, enabling Bitbucket to run on Atlassian’s Platform-as-a-Service built on AWS. The team replicated data from the data center to the cloud in real time before rerouting customer requests. This complex migration was completed by Thoughtworks in just three months with almost no downtime. The results included a 93% reduction in outage-related support requests and a 55% improvement in Bitbucket’s web response time performance.
