Case Study: Wheaton College achieves Passive House residence hall performance with Thornton Tomasetti

A Thornton Tomasetti Case Study

Wheaton College builds a 45,500-square-foot Passive House residence hall with Thornton Tomasetti

Wheaton College sought to create a new, highly sustainable student residence hall. The college engaged Thornton Tomasetti to provide passive house consulting, whole building energy modeling, and structural design services for the project.

Thornton Tomasetti designed Pine Hall to meet the rigorous PHIUS+ Passive House standard. The solution utilized highly insulated airtight construction, high-performance windows, and optimized shading. As a result, the building uses 70 percent less energy than a code-compliant structure and is the first large-scale college residence in New England to achieve this certification.
