Case Study: University of California, Los Angeles enhances music facilities with Thornton Tomasetti structural design

University of California, Los Angeles adds two music buildings totaling 20,000 ft² with Thornton Tomasetti

The University of California, Los Angeles sought to modernize its Herbert Alpert School of Music with two new buildings, an advanced recording studio and a performance space, which needed to be integrated into the existing campus. Thornton Tomasetti was engaged to provide structural design services for this forward-thinking complex.

Thornton Tomasetti designed the structural systems for both new buildings. The recording studio features a masonry bearing wall and composite steel superstructure, while the ensemble building uses cast-in-place concrete gravity systems and reinforced concrete shear walls. Both structures are supported by concrete grade beams and piles and include exterior steel-framed screen walls for light control. The completed Evelyn and Mo Ostin Music Center provides students with 20,000 square feet of modern facilities for music production, research, and technology.
