The Ohio State University completes The James Cancer Hospital with Thornton Tomasetti, adding a $100 million floor

The Ohio State University faced a significant challenge during the construction of its new cancer hospital when a last-minute $100 million grant allowed for the addition of a new floor. This required the structural redesign and relocation of major hospital functions and systems after steel fabrication had already been completed up to the sixth floor. Thornton Tomasetti was brought in to provide structural analysis and design services to solve this complex problem.

Thornton Tomasetti developed a strategy to reuse the vast majority of the already fabricated steel, saving time and resources. The vendor's solution allowed over 3,000 pieces of steel to be reworked into the new design, with only 17 column members needing replacement. This innovative and collaborative approach enabled the project to be delivered on schedule. The resulting 21-story facility, one of the tallest hospitals in the U.S., opened in 2014 and has consistently ranked as a top cancer care center.
